The Government of Pakistan, through a notification issued by the Cabinet Secretariat, has declared three-day public holidays for Eid al-Fitr from March 31 to April 2, 2025. The holidays are in celebration of one of the most important festivals in the Islamic calendar, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Eid-ul-Fitr Holidays 2025 in Pakistan
The Government of Pakistan has officially declared a three-day public holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr from March 31 to April 2, 2025 (Monday to Wednesday), according to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division. This decision was made by the Prime Minister to mark the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. These holidays are in celebration of one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar, marking the end of the holy month of Ramazan.
As per the Cabinet Division’s press release, the holidays are designed to give employees working in government offices a well-deserved break during this important religious occasion, allowing them time to participate in family gatherings, prayers, and other traditional festivities that mark the end of Ramazan.
Moon Sighting and Eid Confirmation
As is the tradition in Pakistan and many other Muslim countries, the date of Eid is determined by the moon sighting. The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee, alongside various zonal committees, will convene on March 30, 2025 (Sunday) to observe the moon of Shawwal. The sighting of the moon will mark the official end of Ramazan, thus confirming the first day of Eid on March 31, 2025.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, there is a good chance of the Shawwal moon being visible on the evening of March 30. This would confirm the start of Eid-ul-Fitr on March 31. In the event of the moon being sighted, the government will follow through with the announced holidays from March 31 to April 2, 2025.
Interestingly, earlier forecasts by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) had already predicted that Eid-ul-Fitr would likely fall on March 31, 2025, as the month of Ramazan was expected to start on March 2. This prediction aligns with the observations from the meteorological department, further increasing the likelihood of Eid being celebrated on March 31.
Public Sector Employees Benefit from the Holidays
The Eid-ul-Fitr holidays offer an opportunity for public sector employees to enjoy time off from their professional duties. This is particularly important in a country where public sector jobs are often seen as a major source of employment. With the government ensuring these holidays, employees will have time to participate in the religious and social events associated with Eid.
The announcement also holds particular significance for the millions of government employees in Islamabad and throughout the country. It is an opportunity for workers, both in urban and rural areas, to spend time with family, perform the special Eid prayers, and offer gratitude to Allah for the strength to complete the fast during the holy month of Ramazan.
